In this the third Dave Davecki mystery, our hero buys a boat, not just any boat...a houseboat, and finds the body of Little Willie Horton floating face up in Lake Superior. One salient fact is, there's thousands of dollars of cold, hard...well, wet actually...cash floating around the body. Strange? Indeed. For, Lake Superior herself is summoning Davecki to solve the murder AND uncover a diabolic plot by evil, water-stealing bad guys who are draining Lake Superior to supply the needs of the thirsty in the desert Southwest.

It all ends in a tidal wave of action as Davecki chases evil Nevada Henderson on sea, land and air. And, with the "help" of Lake Superior, Davecki gets his man...sort of. Plus, believe it or not, Dave Davecki actually kisses a woman. And, hard to believe, she kisses back. Pretty awesome for the detective the Duluth Budgeteer called a "loveless hermit." Great fun all the way through!

Comments: This is an excellent book to read if you are looking for fast-paced action and an entertaining plot. The plot moves from the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior to dry-as-dust Arizona to the super-secret meeting of the FALSIES in Oulu, Wisconsin. The action revolves around everything motorized that runs on land, in the water, and in the air. My favorite was Davecki performing a death-defying jump on a motorcycle across Duluth's Lift Bridge--using an ore boat as a stepping stone. I was highly entertained!

Comments: Savage grabs the reader in the beginning of Lake Effect with his loving description of Lake Superior and holds him throughout the book with a fast paced, and often humorous, tale. He takes a story line that pushes the limits, stealing water form Lake Superior, and makes it sound so credible by creating a cast of characters who are in some cases caricatures . Most of them are people who the reader feels like they know personally, especially the protagonist, Dave Davecki. Davecki is the type of character that the reader would like to have a cup of coffee with, or maybe tea. Overall a nice read. Chris Forman

Comments: The first "Davecki" book I've read. Detective Alphonse "Dave" Davecki comes to life in all his lovable, rumpled glory. This is a laugh-out-loud book full of adventure and lots of motorcycle action. The beautiful depiction of Lake Superior made me want to be there observing the different moods of the Lake. Mike Savage is a master of description. He knows the Lake intimately and takes you there no matter where you live. I could almost smell the pine and poplar forests of northern Wisconsin where the FALSIES held their secret meetings. Full of suspense-filled pages you won't want to put down. The motorcycle ride across the Duluth aerial lift bridge to the airport is unforgettable. I can't wait to read the next Davecki book.
