Howard Jones

In 120 pages of narrative poetry and photos, Jones paints a word and photo portrait of the "Father of Waters" that is unrivaled.

Starting at the headwaters in Itasca County, Minnesota and traveling the entire length of the mighty Mississippi, the author reveals the river as one who has lived on and near it all his life.

A fascinating, personal and intimate portrait of America's singular waterway.

Comments: A delightful book. The author's relationship with the Mississippi is touching and I learned a lot about unknown aspects of the river. I particularly recommend it for school libraries.

Comments: Really liked the book. Great photos. The color section was striking. The author knows a lot about the river that adds a dimension to our non-scientific knowledge of the Mississippi. The choice to use narrative poetry is unusual, but fresh enough to keep my attention.

Comments: Howard's wonderful poetic style makes this book one to enjoy as he traces the Mississippi River from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico. The story-poem is combined with many pictures and covers history, folklore, commerce, and so much more. He has inspired me to want to visit many sites along or near the banks of the Father of Waters.

Comments: "Portrait of the Mississippi" by Howard Jones is a very interesting and enjoyable book to read. The authors wonderful poetic style of writing makes this book a joy to read as the author shares his travels down the Mississippi River from Lake Itasca, Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of some 2552 miles. The author has included many pictures in this book ( I counted 125 photo's). This book covers history, folklore, commerce, and much more. I found it amazing that this author not only succeeded in his desire to travel the distance of the Mississippi River but then was able to share his experiences by writing this great book for others to enjoy. I came across this book at a book signing at the Tarpon Springs, Florida Library. The book signing was put on by a writing group that meets at the Library one day a week. I was able to meet the author and purchase this book, which he graciously signed for me. I consider this book to be a great find and one that I can leave on my coffee table and pick up periodically and enjoy. I recommend this book to anyone that would like to benefit by this great author's travel along the Mississippi River.
